Episode 2: Escape from Put-in-Bay!
In this episode, we’re recording onboard the Miller Ferry, heading home from a shorter-than-planned camping trip to South Bass Island, Ohio.
Click the play button in the embedded player or go here to hear all about why we love Put-in-Bay, how the weather gods didn’t smile kindly on our trip, and why we still had fun regardless! (Spoiler alert: This trip really lived up to the old Lake Erie motto “Don’t Give Up the Ship!”)

Mentioned in this episode:
Where we camped: South Bass Island is one of our favorite parts about living in Northeast Ohio. Home to Put-in-Bay, it offers everything you want from an island destination. Even better, it’s less than a 2-hour car (and ferry) ride away from Cleveland! The 2018 season wraps up this coming weekend with their Halloween bash, but the island is already gearing up for 2019’s kickoff in early April!
South Bass Island State Park: Although we visit Put-In-Bay at least once a year, this was our first time camping on the island. The South Bass Island State Park’s campground was a wonderful place to stay - conveniently located near the island’s attractions but also far enough from downtown Put-in-Bay for peace and relaxation. Its location atop a cliffside offers beautiful views of Lake Erie and the lakeside picnic area has a public launch ramp, watercraft rentals and a small stone beach.
Miller Ferry: Miller Boat Line’s ferry from Catawba is always our go-to when traveling to Put-in-Bay, even when we aren’t towing a teardrop. They also deserve bonus points for keeping everyone informed about the ferry’s shifting schedule during the weekend’s storms. And if you’re looking for ideas on what to do on South Bass Island, Miller Ferry’s website and social media offer a treasure trove of maps, coupons and info.
The Forge: There are a number of great places to grab a bite on South Bass. However, if you can only go to one, The Forge gets our vote. Coffee, cocktails and — most importantly — a large selection of sweet and savory crepes! We had to cut the trip (and our planned meals) short but we still made time to grab Saturday morning breakfast here.
Massie Cliffside Preserve: While driving around in the rain, we stumbled upon the Massie Cliffside Preserve trail. It’s a short, wooded walk packed with scenery and wildlife. At trail’s end, you’re rewarded with a secluded park and benches overlooking the lake.
Not mentioned in the episode, but worth a shout-out: After recording this episode, we made a pitstop at CheeseHaven in Port Clinton. Their parking (always a concern when traveling with a teardrop trailer or other RV) is almost as ample as their selection of cheese, meats, and treats!
